EDITORS’ NOTES

Expanding its preceding EP into a debut LP, the Brooklyn/Philadelphia quartet Vacationer even kept the same title, Gone. These gauzy tunes are really an extension of that prior three-song release. With lightly bouncing piano loops playing over a '90s-inspired beat (and dusty vinyl ambience mixed in to make it feel like you’re actually listening to an old record), the opening “Everyone Knows” introduces the album sounding touched by the hand of Saint Etienne. Sweeping orchestral parts are sampled into the catchy “Good as New,” where Ken Vasoli croons excitedly over crunchy beats as vibraphone notes chime underneath. “Dreamlike” makes good on its title with lazy sitar riffs and skittering rhythms that massage the eardrums as a layered wall of sound builds into a blissed-out sonic pillow. This is all contrasted nicely with Vasoli’s stuttered phrasing, which melts into long, drawn-out crooning in the chorus. The title track makes good use of vintage girl-group trappings.

About Vacationer

Formed in 2011 as a side project for Philly-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Kenny Vasoli, Vacationer blends the escapist dream pop of Beach House with the quasi-mystical electro-pop of Animal Collective. Rhythmic, heady, and hypnotic yet peppered with heartfelt lyrics and genuine emotion, Vacationer released its debut EP in 2011, followed by the full-length Gone in 2012; both were put out by Downtown Records.
