With his Perfect Darkness/Berlin Sunrise EP, Fink expands on the shadowy title track of his 2011 album, as well as on the lightly paced “Berlin Sunrise.” It starts with a radio edit of “Perfect Darkness”; though it’s still three minutes and 43 seconds, it’s only half the length of the original. Next is the song’s “Lapalux Remix,” which unapologetically dials up the Auto-Tune on Fink’s vocals while substituting guitars for keyboards and organic ambience. But just when you think this mix is all about restraint and minimalism, the tune softly explodes into a sexy downtempo seduction replete with libidinous R&B beats and soothing bass. Following this, Fink bequeaths the mic to experimental singer/songwriter Andreya Triana. Her simmering cover of “Perfect Darkness” is a reminder of Fink’s songwriting prowess; in this realm he’s like a fashion designer, tailoring his creations with an enigmatic woman in mind. The there’s another radio edit, this time of “Berlin Sunrise”; the Lee Jones remix sounds more Coldplay-influenced than the original.
