Editors’ Notes

Young Empires are an electro dance-pop quartet of young men who hail from Toronto—yet the group's debut EP, Wake All My Youth, plays with the cosmopolitan savvy of likeminded bands from London. Young Empires lean on some '80s influences that can be heard right from the opening song, “Rain of Gold,” where Speak & Spell–era Depeche Mode intersects a modern pop sensibility that has more in common with Passion Pit. But the party really kicks in with the New Order–flavored “Enter Through the Sun,” a throbbing dance-floor magnet with a highly addictive melody in the chorus. Even though the beat sounds a bit repetitive in “White Doves,” the melody oozes a much darker romance that works its spell on the listener with repeated listens. “Against the Wall” imports angular post-punk guitar leads and stylishly monotonous verse vocals reminiscent of a young Gary Numan—though the worldbeat percussion here recalls Talking Heads. “Beaches” is less reminiscent of the '80s but still abounds with neon synths and post-goth disco.
