Editors’ Notes

The Lumineers' sound balances the timelessness of country and gospel with innovative flourishes by cellist Neyla Pekarek (who also handles piano and some singing duties). Their 2012 eponymous debut is gripping right from the short-but-catchy first song, “Flowers in Your Hair,” where Wesley Schultz croons in a reedy, high tenor, similar to Ryan Adams’ approximations of Desire-era Dylan. Schultz’s knack for the lyrical narrative surface in “Classy Girls,” where he sets the scene in a bar replete with background chatter and peripheral tavern sounds. He sings of an unforgettable woman from inside this atmosphere—as if his producer had set up a microphone, handed him his guitar, and told him to put down his drink and play. When the rhythm takes off, it propels the tune to a realm reminiscent of Wilco’s “Airline to Heaven” from Mermaid Avenue II. If there were such a thing as classical honky-tonk, the rustic and elegant “Dead Sea” would perfectly fit the genre.

Instant Love

I'm absolutely loving this album and band, it's like Mumford & Sons meets City and Colour which automatically makes it fabulous

I love your new album! Wish they would come to Canada!

Trust me

From beginning to end this is a truly great album with a lot of upbeat songs on guitar complimented with mandolin. The Lumineers self titled album also has a few great slower tracks such as 'slow it down' and 'flapper girl'.
Defiantly will be one of the better albums of 2012, very fresh and new and also great lyrics.
It wont take long to grow on you!

The Lumineers, a folk-rock trio out of Denver, Colorado, deliver an acoustic-based Americana sound that touches a lot of stylistic bases, from folk to gospel to heartland rock and the narrative end of country, all with interesting rhythmic twists and turns. The band had its beginnings in 2002 when Jeremiah Fraites lost his 19-year-old brother Josh to a drug overdose. Fraites and his brother's best friend, Wesley Schultz, turned to music to deal with their sorrow, and were soon writing songs and gigging...
