Great stuff!

A really wonderful and beautiful show. Adam Guettel is a fantastic, if complicated writer.

Heartbreakingly Brilliant.

This musical touches me deeply. It's a devastatingly honest, brutal, primal exploration of family, love, spirituality, glory, and humanity. Truly, and I mean, truly one of the greatest modern pieces ever written. It will challenge you at first -- but if you keep going back to it, it burrows itself deeper and deeper bringing you closer and closer to so many truths that at times, you may have to look away. Get curious about, read about it -- it is a bizarre and unbelievable tragedy. What a beautiful way to honour his story. I'm giving it 5 stars. If I could, I would give it more. Enjoy!

One of the Best Scores in Contemporary Musical Theatre

I could neve tire of this score. I've been listening to it since 2005, and now, at age 19, I've really grown to appreciate just how brilliant it truly is. Adam Guettel is, without question, the next big thing in contemporary musical theatre. His sensibility is enviably sophisticated and complex, factors which shine throughout every song of Floyd Collins.

Floyd Collins tells the factual story of the Kentucky caver who became trapped in a sand cave and eventually became a media sensation. Despite efforts to rescue him, Floyd eventually realized and accepts his fate: he is trapped in his own grave.

Guettel's brilliant and gorgeous music has strong influences of bluegrass, Americana, and classical, all written with strong theatrical sensibility. I've been listening to this score for seven years of my life and I still can't listen to it without picking up something new and astonishing, either musically or lyrically. Banjos, guitars, strings, and piano permeate the orchestrations and there is literally not a single bad song in the bunch. There are, however, some personal highlights:

Time To Go - The third part of Floyd's epically long opening, a whopping twleve minutes of continuous solo singing. This song in particular stands out if only for the gorgeous strings.

Daybreak - A song that cuts so deeply with its beauty. Sung gorgeously by Jason Danieley and Christopher Innvar.

The Riddle Song - Perhaps one of the most famous songs from the show, the long Act 1 closer that features Floyd and his brother Home riddling back and forth to pass the time as Homer attempts to rescue Floyd. Wonderfully upbeat with tight and awesome harmonies.

The Carnival - Bizarre as hell but captivating to listen to. The orchestrations really shine here as there is very little in terms of vocals.

Through the Mountain - Theresa McCarthy sings this so well. I used to skip past this song because of a slightly strange opening. But once I actually let the song play all of the way through, I was so moved.

The Dream - Theatrical and astounding. The ending will break your heart in two.

How Glory Goes - This isn't just my favourite song from this show, or even my favourite song from a musical. It's just my favourite song. Ever. I literally can't listen to, or sing, this song without crying. After 'The Dream' breaks your heart, How Glory Goes will shatter it down to nothingness. So beautiful, haunting, and sad. Incredible.

Adam Guettel is the future of musical theatre, and Floyd Collins is perhaps one of the greatest contemporary musicals of the last fifteen years. I'm not going to say you'll like it, because it is most definitely not for everyone.... but if you have a wide appreciation for music and a good ear/appreciation for complexity and subtlety, this just might be right up your alley.
