iTunes Review

Minneapolis indie rockers Tapes n’ Tapes deliver another batch of urgent, catchy, and clever tunes on their third full-length release. The self-produced Outside features a wide spectrum of styles that sharply highlight the band’s multiple personalities and charms. There’s much to enjoy here including standouts “Badaboom,” with its ramshackle rhythm pattern, the infectious guitar hook that anchors “One In the World,” the stuttering, slithering “Outro,” and the rollicking “Freak Out.” Elsewhere they drop the tempo, if not the dynamics, for “The Saddest of All Keys” and “Hidee Ho,” both of which stand apart among the jagged, jittery pop of much of the album, while “On and On” builds and releases before devolving into some glorious noise. Tight and punchy one moment, loose and jangly the next, Outside succeeds by playing on the band’s well honed strengths.

Tapes 'n Tapes

Will You Run From What You See ?

Trop débile, 2011 commence bien pour la music

Make yourself an EP with Freakout and Badaboom

What wiseguy told Tapes 'n Tapes to open their newly released album Outside with Badaboom? Even though these guys know clever Minnesota pop like Pavement know incomplete songs, they should have let Badaboom close the album, as it seriously overshadows the remainder of the tracks. Like the self-titled Prinzhorn Dance School or Christopher Arruda's God Hates a Coward album, a powerhouse final track helps retain the album's freshness and encourages repeated listenening. I may relabel the tracks, but the only must-have moments for TnT on the album is Freak Out and Badaboom.

Minneapolis, MN, indie rock classicists Tapes 'n Tapes formed in the winter of 2003, when guitarist/vocalist Josh Grier (aka "Tapes 1"), bassist Matt Kretzmann ("'n") and guitarist Steve Nelson ("Tapes 2") began crafting a sound that harked back to the Pixies and Pavement and also recalled more contemporary bands like the Shins. Nelson left the band, with drummer Karl Schweitz becoming the band's second "Tapes"; this lineup recorded the Tapes 'n Tapes EP in early 2004, recording in a cabin in Wisconsin....
