R.I.P., Kate.....

I have owned this album since 1975, on vinyl, cassette, C.D. and now it is in my iTunes library. I could never tire of hearing those souring harmonies, Kate will be missed by many.

Super talented

Lots of excellent songs--if you like contemporary folk music, clever lyrics, beautiful melodies, some banjo... you can't go wrong here! I particularly love Kiss and Say Goodbye, Heart Like a Wheel, Foolish You, Complainte Pour Ste Catherine, and the wonderful Loudain Wainwright Swimming Song.

Beautiful

There are some records and artists that are a revelation from the first time you hear them. Kate and Anna's first was one of those experiences for me. It said things that I understood in a language that seemed familiar but new, and with music and harmonies so unexpected and beautiful. It was superficially simple but incredibly accomplished, unpretentious but often profound. Their songs had the quality of good short stories, or poems, that communicate far more than you could expect in a few minutes, and leave an emotional flavour that stays with you for years. Their second album, Dancer With Bruised Knees, also stayed on my vinyl turntable for many years.

I think my favourite song of theirs was 'Sun, Son (Shining on the Water)', from the 'Love Over and Over' album. It takes a familiar experience for many Canadians of a certain age, a ferry trip across a river in winter, and turns it into a meditation on home, childhood wonder, and spirituality.

God bless you Kate. Peace to Anna, Martha, Rufus, and all.

The music of Montreal-born songwriting sisters Kate & Anna McGarrigle first came to international recognition in 1974 when Linda Ronstadt recorded Anna's "Heart Like a Wheel" as the title song to one of her albums. The Canadian sisters were signed to Warner Bros. and recorded Kate & Anna McGarrigle, an album of deeply felt (sometimes deeply funny) songs with a homey, eclectic folk backing and tart, striking vocals. It was widely hailed. Its two follow-ups seemed rushed, though they contained...
