Album Review

Pianist William Joseph's debut album, Within mixes instrumental pop, classical compositions, and reworked rock tunes into an atmospheric mélange that seems to be aimed at a middle ground between classical and new age. Most likely appealing to fans of lite-classical artists such as Josh Groban and Jim Brickman, Within features Joseph at the piano backed by strings both real and synthesized as well as a shiny layer of orchestral and programmed beats all via the production wizardry of Grammy winner David Foster. Despite hip crossover attempts with Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir and the soft rock classic "Dust in the Wind," the album works best as a kind of background music as there isn't much difference between his "pop" tunes and such classical standards as "Ave Maria." A crisp technician, Joseph does display a marked intensity on the title track and that coupled with his darkly handsome, matinee idol looks should garner him more interest than this album might have otherwise.

Customer Reviews

He's touring with Il Divo ..as the warm up act! And he did!

I attended the Toronto Il Divo concert last night ..and always feel sorry for the "opener"! But he entertained with good grace, amazing talent and his music was pretty exciting ..wish all his songs in this album had been new ..getting abit tired of Ave Maria. And wish I'd bought the album in iTunes not at the show for $25!

Exceptional Talent

We had the pleasure of seeing William play as the opening act to IL Divo in Calgary this past Wednesday. If you want to experience a true gift that this young man has, you must get this album. He personifies what passion and love of music is all about. The only down side to this album off of iTunes is that they have removed Williams version of Kashmir, which is a real shame. This kid knows how to Rock and bring together a beautiful sense of classical. I would have paid the full $9.00 just for that one song! He played it at the concert and WOW! Keep going William, there are not many individuals who loose themselves in their art. Congrats on a wonderful creation!

William Joeseph

I went to the Il Divo concert on April 18, 2007 here in Calgary and William Joseph was wonderful. I would love to see him alone for a night in concert with an orchestra. I hope he continues to do concerts. Linda
