Album Review

You’ve gotta give it to Cassadee Pope — in a genre dominated by dudes, she’s a breath of fresh air, with a voice that doesn’t rely on Auto-Tune (which, after spending years as the province of studio engineers and tone-deaf frontmen, has now become as commonplace in emo-pop as guitar distortion) to pack a punch. On her band’s second recording, she sings about boys with a mix of girly excitement and blunt sexuality. “I told myself that I would control myself/But my heart and zipper seem to disagree” she confides on the most risqué track, an otherwise anonymous pop tune that gains most of its identity from her strong performance. The rest of the EP follows suit; the songs are perfectly pleasant, all of them stuffed to the gills with Top 40 choruses and “whoa oh” vocals, but it’s Pope’s delivery that helps make Beneath It All something more than your standard S*A*M* & Sluggo production. In a genre that notoriously relies on the same producers, collaborators, and engineers, it’s getting increasingly difficult for a band to carve out its own sound, but Hey Monday sound like they’re doing just fine.

great album!

i love hey monday's sound. it's great music for every mood you have.
she also has a very unique voice that add a nice touch on the songs.
great job!

Decent album, worth buying.

Happy that Beneath It All is finally released. Their new sound is more "pop", so I don't think this album should be listed under alternative. However, I do think that this album is worth purchasing. The songs still feature catchy melodies and exploding choruses. My favorite songs are "Fall Into Me" and "I Don't Wanna Dance". Still waiting for the music video to be released in Canada! It's too bad this is the last album/EP to feature Michael "Jersey" Moriarty on bass, which makes all the more worth while to purchase. Plus it's only $5.99 for the entire album. Their sound may have changed slightly to try and reach a larger, more mainstream audience, but I think they still tried to incorporate their pop/punk roots. Can't wait for the full-length next year. Keep up the great work!

Great EP.

This is a great EP follow up to Hold On Tight! People say they sound different but personally I think they sound very much the same! Some songs are a little different sounding but I absolutely love it! Cassadee's voice is amazing and she has stepped up her game. I'm ecstatic for their full album that is to be released in the new year.

All songs are great but the ones that stood out for me were Wish You Were Here, Hangover, and Wondergirl! They're wonderful! :D

Biography

Formed: 2007 in West Palm Beach, FL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Led by powerhouse vocalist Cassadee Pope, Hey Monday debuted their fizzy emo-pop sound with 2008's Hold on Tight. The band formed in West Palm Beach, FL, where Pope was first discovered at a regional music conference. Although still in high school, the singer drew attention from A&R execs with her voice, which recalled the radio-ready wail of Avril Lavigne and Paramore's Hayley Williams. She then formed a band with fellow teenagers Jersey Moriarty (bass), Elliot James (drums), and guitarists Mike...
