EDITORS’ NOTES
To Bring You My Love is a snapshot of Harvey at her most precocious, a 26-year-old Englishwoman weaving together primal howls, moaning vocals, menacing religious imagery, and unfettered sexuality into seductive blues-inspired spirituals that could rival the greats (Harvey is unashamedly referential here, openly nodding to heroes Captain Beefheart and Lead Belly). “Down By the Water,” with its meaty bass and sinister strings, is a master class in riding the groove, while “Long Snake Moan” is a thrilling exploration of personal power.
