Home by Jane Monheit -Wonderfully more of the same

My first favorite "girl singer" was Ethel Waters. She was singing "Miss Otis Regrets" and I was on my Mother's knee. That's nearly 70 years ago and there have been many favorites since, Helen Ward, Lee Wiley, Carol Kidd. For me, its been early Carmen McRae, number 1, Irene Kral, 2 and Sarah Vaughan. I've probably heard them all, but in all that time, the best voice I ever heard was the voice of Jane Monheit. Buying her records is as automatic as breathing. "Home" keeps the magic happening. Using small but wonderful accompaniments she dusts off some of the best music ever written paying tribute to the great writers from Tin Pan Alley. Guest artists, John Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola, Joe Magnarelli and others help make each number unique and a gem. I especially loved the reunion with Mark O'Connor on violin on I Didn't Know About You/All Too Soon. Few artists are in such control of every part of everything they do and so true to their roots. Jane just gets better with every outing. She produced this CD but has always been in charge. You can tell by the way Jane showcases herself and the great standards she sings. After 30 years of singing and ten making records, this wine is definitely ready to drink. There's none better. Enjoy!

At the tender age of 20, New York vocalist Jane Monheit was the first runner-up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute vocal competition, winning a $10,000 scholarship to further her musical education. Judges couldn't exactly place her sound, which blended natural elegance with a potent yet impressively controlled presentation, and by 2000, Monheit had joined Diana Krall as one of the most highly touted female talents in jazz. That May she signed to N-Coded and released her debut, Never Never Land....
