Messy, and utterly listenable

You would expect Erykah Badu's bassist to know something about melody. Stephen Bruner (a.k.a Thundercat) demonstrates that here clearly. Songs like Daylight and Is It Love? are catchy, pleasurable tunes that the listener warms to very quickly.

What's remarkable about this album is how Thundercat uses dissonance to put us off-balance and yet manages to push his melodies through the noise to keep us grounded. Broken beats, sharps, flats, sonic subterfuge abound. But the core of each song grabs you and doesn't let you forget it.

There are echos, strong echos, of Jaco Pastorius. If you download some of this Thundercat album, buy Jaco's track, Portrait of Tracy, as a mandatory companion. Read more to hear more @torontoArm.

Thundercat Hoooo!

Don’t let the name fool you Thundercat is ten types of adult awesome. Its an ambitious recipe with a touch of Wonky‘s unstable synths, some wild breaks, a pinch of experimental jazz and more than a sprinkling of nu-soul. Add some electronic funk and experimental Rap beats and you don’t need to know what the music of the future sounds like. You just heard it. If you like Bibio, or Grizzly Bear you’ll be right at home here. Thundercat is one of those hidden gems that once you hear it you keep telling your friends “why doesn’t anyone know about these guys???”. Buy it. Then go tell your friends.

Get it, you'll love it

Great bass playing with spacey jazz feel.
I love it and can't wait for the next album.

Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner spent the last part of the new millennium's first decade becoming the go-to bassist for practically every artist in black vanguard music. His nimble, syncopated, groove-heavy basslines were heard on albums by Erykah Badu, Sa-Ra, Flying Lotus, and others. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Bruner had the good fortune to be part of a music family. His father, Ronald Bruner, Sr., was an accomplished drummer, working with artists like Diana Ross, the Temptations, and Gladys Knight....
