Editors’ Notes

2007’s Cease to Begin is a melodic treasure. The tight country harmonies of “Marry Song,” the swooning ‘60s-to-‘90s shoegazer pop of “No One’s Gonna Love You” and the ominous, haunting anthemic riff of the album’s opener “Is There A Ghost” illustrate the group’s far-reaching range.

Customer Reviews

A solid follow up to their debut album...

A solid follow up to their debut album. This under-rated band exceeded my expectations by proving their first effort wasn't just beginner's luck. My personal favourites are The General Specific and No One's Gonna Love You. A perfect album for that long drive up to the cottage. They also deliver a great live performance. Check them out!

Great follow up

Fantastic follow up to their first; not as anthemic, but equally great, I think. The vocals are stronger and more confidant, and the songs are all powerful. I bought this yesterday, have listened to it six times, and still want to listen to it again and again. This is an absolutely wicked band (of horses). If you loved the first record, I believe you'll love this.

It's Good

If you like their other albums, you'll like this one. A couple listens to warm up to, but definitely some good tunes. A bit short, they barely use half the disc space! 3.5 out of 5.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Emerging in 2004 with a blend of woodsy midtempo rock and reverb-laden vocals, Band of Horses gained an audience in their native Northwest before Everything All the Time made them indie rock darlings. Multi-instrumentalists Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke founded the group after an eight-year run with Carissa's Wierd, and an early concert alongside future labelmates Iron & Wine caught the attention of Sub Pop Records. Sub Pop signed Band of Horses in 2005 and reissued their self-released EP later...
