iTunes Review

Les Trois Accords are an indie rock quartet from Drummondville with a penchant for puns, wordplay, and sparkling melodies. Their fifth studio album J’Aime Ta Grand-Mère shimmers with sweetly absurdist songs, best demonstrated by its steel drum-driven title track. While “Bamboula” takes a page from the Pixies, with its thundering kick drums tempered by a moody bassline, lead singer Simon Proulx channels his inner Ian Curtis with deep, quasi-punk vocals. Proulx lightens the mood momentarily with “Exercice,” which flip-flops from a childish schoolboy chant before exploding into a garage rock jam, and then dialing it back down again. J’Aime Ta Grand-Mère is gorgeously sequenced, smartly lyrical, and referential of both British new wave and local Québécois indie legends.

A Canadian rock band that got its start in 1997 when founding members Olivier Benoit and Simon Proulx got together, Les Trois Accords released their first album, Gros Mammouth Album, in 2003. A deluxe edition of that album, Gros Mammouth Album Turbo, hit shelves in 2004, and contained two bonus tracks not on the original release. In 2005, the band hit a high when it was an opening act for the Rolling Stones. Although the group's membership has changed during its career, the leadership...
