Album Review

Greatest Hits bears a striking resemblance to The Essential Jars of Clay, which was released only seven months prior. Jars of Clay left the roster of Essential Recordings in early 2007 and promptly founded their own label, Gray Matters, under whose name they released the holiday-themed Christmas Songs that same year. Essential Recordings continued to reissue the band's existing material, though, offering up the double-disc The Essential Jars of Clay that fall and the (very) similar Greatest Hits in early 2008. Both releases feature a retrospective view of Jars of Clay, cataloguing their biggest hits (the strongest of which come from 1995's self-titled debut, particularly the post-grunge single "Flood") alongside some lesser-known tracks and fan favorites. Although The Essential Jars of Clay contains twice the material, those seeking a quick fix could do worse than this disc.

A Fine Album From A Fantastic Band

Although this compilation is not a perfect mix, it needs to be understood that this is an obligatory greatest hits album released by the record label due to their parting and Jars going independent. Still, the remastered songs sound excellent and the quality of music from Jars of Clay is, of course, top notch. The new single "Love Is The Protest" is worth purchasing. It is a great addition to their wonderful library of songs. If you are not familiar with Jars of Clay, this is a great introduction. However, I do recommend that you explore more of their full length albums, each with its own unique sound and worth the listen. There are many excellent songs from Jars of Clay. This greatest hits album is only the tip of the iceberg.

Useful starting point

No reason to blame the band for this...It was released by the record company that the band has split from. Anyway, most fans will have this but at least you can buy the new song as a single.

Jars of Clay Rules

I didn't buy this album, (just the new song) because I own every Jars of Clay album. I love every song they have on this CD though. I also love every song they ever put out. If you want some great Jars of Clay music buy Good Monsters, Who We Are Instead, The Eleventh Hour, Much Afraid, and their first CD which is self titled. There are some excellent songs on those discs that didn't make it on to the Greatest Hits. Otherwise I definately recomend this album because EVERY song is awesome.

Formed: 1993 in Greenville, IL

Genre: Inspirational

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky jangle pop wing of alternative rock radio, at the time a rarity on the contemporary Christian music scene. Such success set the stage for breakthroughs by Christian bands like dc Talk and Sixpence...
