Democracy Reigns Supreme

In 1970, Diana Ross after much anticiaption said farewell to the Supremes to launch her solo career. The remaining Supremes Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong who had been relegated to background singers only, stepped forward back into the spotlight with relatively unknown Jean Terrell taking the lead. The new formation reminded fans of the early kinship once heard in the very first supreme hits of the 60's , and showcased the talents of all three ladies not just one. Early releases were produce by Frank Wilson, followed by Smokey Robinson and Jimmy Webb. Early releases like " Up to the Ladder " and " Stoned Love " gave Ross a run for her money. The new Supremes albums were more cohesive than early DR & S releases and the songs showed a more spirituality and soul. Listen to " Paradise" with Lynda Lawrence and know that Motown possessed a Supreme machine that could have kept the Motown brand intact
