In the ’70s, Quebec songsmith Richard Séguin made a name for himself as an idiosyncratic folk artist, but on 1985’s Double vie (“Double Life”), he reveals a dramatically different side of his musical personality. Séguin emerges as a straight-up rock ’n’ roller, albeit one with a surfeit of gravitas and sophistication. The choppy guitars and colourful keyboards of “Gentil, gentil” show a fondness for New Wave, while he sounds almost Springsteen-esque on “J’te cherche.” Wherever his muse leads him, he goes with assurance.

From the outset his melodies drew on the rich traditions of folk and blues, but his richly imagistic lyrics were always firmly rooted in contemporary sensibilities.
