Album Review

Needtobreathe offer up another collection of sweeping, reverent rock songs with The Outsiders, the band's first effort since The Heat earned praise from the Christian community two years prior. This is the musicians' first album as genuine stars, and the music is appropriately huge, with echoing vocals and ringing guitars that take their cues from classic rock. Such epic material has become fairly standard in the CCM world, where the influence of U2 and Coldplay is never more than a guitar riff away. The Outsiders also flirts with touches of roots rock and traditional gospel, though, from the title track's powerful Southern stomp to the sheer power of Bear Rinehart's voice. Like Will Hoge, Rinehart puts a contemporary spin on the raw, gritty sounds of Joe Cocker and Otis Redding, and his strong delivery is almost preacher-like in its intensity. As a result, this album covers more ground than records by similar artists, and it does so without alienating any of its secular-minded listeners, too.

Incredible Album

The first time I heard this album it was cursory, while sitting at my desk working. When I took time to put on headphones and listen from start to finish I was blown away. This album has everything; the sobre melody of "Stones Under Rushing Water", the up-beat and funny "Girl Named Tennessee" and the passionate "Something Beautiful". This has got to be one of my all time favourite albums. Thought-provoking lyrics, incredible music - what else do you need?

These guys have done awesome again, as usual. Please come and gig in Canada again (Toronto) : )

lyrically deep, great songwriting again

Wow, buy this album! Not quite a 5 only becuase there are a couple songs that I consider fillers but other than that the album is brilliant. It has a bit of a country sound to it but not too much and there is a lot of chorus' sung by the entire band together. Big highlights are Valley of Tomorrow (great chorus), Hurricane (wonderful rythym, great bass line), Prisoner (very interesting sound), Girl Named Tennessee (a grower that gets better all the time), and Garden (maybe the best lyrics Needtobreathe have ever written). This band needs to be discovered by the mainstream!

While enrolled at Furman University several years later, Bear — besides being an excellent wide receiver (he won the 2002 Banks McFadden trophy...
