Move over Handel

Rameau might not be as famous as Handel but it doesn’t mean his baroque opéra-ballet is any less palpitating. The opéra is set in Peru, Persia, Turkey and America and tells the story of love triumphing over adversity. This recording is instrumental, no singing here. However, you can hear the northern wind in the violin arrangements, you can also imagine what the 1700s Parisian jet-set imagined America was like with the "Savage dance". For the price, this recording is a sweet deal. Sure, the “Rough Guide to classical music” doesn’t pick this recording as its top 100 classical album (Frans Brüggen’s recording, available on iTunes for $12 was picked), but it did the trick for me. If you only want to buy one song, go for "Chaconne". It’s like a symphony in a song...

La Chapelle Royale is one of a number of ensembles, vocal and instrumental, founded by the Belgian conductor and keyboard player Philippe Herreweghe. The group specializes in French music of the 17th and 18th centuries. While Herreweghe was still a university student, he founded the Collegium Vocale of Ghent, one of the first groups dedicated to authentic performances of Baroque vocal and choral music.
