iTunes Review

Unplugged albums are just about mandatory for any veteran pop/rock artist, and Dave Matthew has been down that road already, but this recording — featuring Matthews paired once again with cohort Tim Reynolds — more than justifies its existence. The duo turns this concert of old favorites, new tunes and well-selected covers into an intimate listening experience, with lots of chatty commentary and extended acoustic guitar flights. Matthews taps the emotional cores of familiar numbers like “Gravedigger” and “Crash Into Me,” while Reynolds has revelatory moments of his own with “You Are My Sanity” and “Betrayal.” Matthews’ gargled vocal slurs and thorny phrasing are easier to appreciate in this stripped-down context — without the sometimes cluttered arrangements of his band getting in the way, he draws out the inner fire coursing through “Grace Is Gone,” “Some Devil,” “Crush” and other tunes. Renditions of Neil Young’s “Down By The River” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” compliment the originals nicely. Matthews fanatics will no doubt delight in this release, but even Dave’s doubters will come away impressed by the fluency and bite of these performances.

Customer Reviews

Tim's guitar on some old tracks is unbelievable. Well worth it. Nice to have just the two of them put out an album again!

What a man!

Oh Dave, the way you sing can make a woman cry. This album is so awesome. Buy the dvd too. It is so nice to see such a human side of a star. I just love Eh Hee.

this is by far the best i've heard Dave Sing live, his voice is so smooth and he nails all the notes. He really shows his vocal capabilities on this album; its especially apparent in songs like Bartender, and Eh Hee, and Gravedigger. The guitaring is wondeful, Dave's usual talent soars through, and Tim's guitar playing adds all the great atmosphere you could want. His additions are perfect to all the songs, and his solos are freaking AWESOME!!! Betrayal couldn't get any better, he is one amazingly talented guitar player. Im at lack of words for this album, but the two together make a perfect pair, especially to hear live. Watch the dvd too; getting to see them play is unbelievable. This album is a 5 star thumbs up, if you are a fan of DMB, you can't let yourself miss out on this album!!

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians -- bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and, initially, keyboardist Peter Griesar -- and the band built up a strong word-of-mouth...
