The Loudspeaker EP

The Loudspeaker EP

Fresh out of college, this L.A. band sounds plucked from another time: the neon-glowing, soft-rocking '80s, to be exact. There's a touch of Wilson Phillips in their relationship-analyzing pop, and singer Katie Gavin uses her brooding vocals as a rhythmic element, accentuating every last syllable. She remains boldly unapologetic on bubbly synth gems "Loudspeaker" and "Promise," and her bandmates sound equally unabashed. Their glossy production and slick drum programming cast a seductive R&B glow over the proceedings, particularly moody ballad "Winterbreak," which details the masochistic thrill of one last kiss.
