iTunes Editors' Notes

With a successful world tour and his “Hallelujah” becoming a first-call contemporary standard, the past few years have been particularly rewarding for Leonard Cohen. On Old Ideas, his 12th studio album, the iconic singer/songwriter/poet continues his exploration of the spiritual, the sensual, and the cycle of life over the course of 10 songs. His unexcitable, half-spoken baritone is a calming, lyrical guide, with vocalists Dana Glover and The Webb Sisters and longtime collaborators Jennifer Warnes and Sharon Robinson providing tonal contrasts. With dual piano and organ accompaniment, “Show Me the Place” has the solemn levity of a modern hymn. The bluesy “Darkness” and the cabaret-friendly “Different Sides” showcase Cohen’s noirish and uptempo sides. “Banjo" has a rural North Americana arrangement, appropriately enough, with an unexpected, Dixieland-like clarinet-and-trumpet interlude.

Customer Reviews

Familar but different from the past.

Going Home, Lullaby, Come Healing and Crazy to Love You are my favourite cuts, but they are all good and most are great. Banjo is a "light" Cohen song that is enjoyable to listen to in any mood. What sets this aprt from past offerings is the music is lowkeyed and the background vocal are not soaring. It is all Leonard and his smoky, raspy vocals to soothe the soul. Mr. Cohen, you wonderful genius this will be my favourite release of 2012 for sure.

Serve with a nice full body red wine, alone or with friends...

Can't stop listening

The nakedly honest lyrics, sweet and haunting melodies, and the familiar bedroom voice of Leonard back by angelic harmonies leave nothing to desire. Music that speaks to the dusty corners of the soul. Everything we have come to expect from our greatest Candian poet.

Really good, what a voice

Really unique voice really a special album! Love it!

One of the most fascinating and enigmatic — if not the most successful — singer/songwriters of the late '60s, Leonard Cohen has retained an audience across five decades of music-making interrupted by various digressions into personal and creative exploration, all of which have only added to the mystique surrounding him. Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon), he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the '60s who...
