One of Mexico's most popular and influential dance bands, La Sonora Santanera rode the wave of the musica tropical movement in the 1950s and '60s, playing rhumbas and cha-chas while later incorporating more traditionally Mexican flavors, such as cumbia and boleros, into the mix. La Sonora Santanera were equally celebrated for their instrumental polish and their ability to fuse passion and precision, and this two-disc collection features 40 of the group's best songs.

La Sonora Santanera's leader, Carlos Colorado, belonged to a local orquesta in his hometown of Barra de Santa Ana, but it was not until he moved to Mexico City that his group, Tropical Santanera, was born. The band played private parties around the city, attracting the attention of promoter Jesús "Palillo" Martínez, who helped them get a gig at the Follies Bergere Theater. The band changed its name to La Sonora Santanera and played a mix of dance-oriented styles, earning a contract with CBS Mexico...
