Beauty in Traffic

This album is a continuation of the already great career of Sufjan Stevens. However, some may be unimpressed with this album as it appears on iTunes, because it contains none of Sufjan's beatiful singing and does not come with the actual "film" of The BQE. The film is the real centrepiece of this album, as it shows what the music was written for. Also, the film does contain two bonus tracks that do not appear on the CD, one of them being a "sung" song. However, if one really enjoys orchestra and wind band performances, this is an ideal album. It includes all of Sufjan's signature motifs and patterns and is rather enjoyable to listen to. On the British iTunes store, one user commented that this is a great album to listen to with good headphones. I would agree with this statement. It is perfect background music for driving, or even being stuck in traffic. It contains several different styles of music as well.

Movements I and II are similar orchestral pieces with brass and woodwind flourishes, while Movement III is more energetic and repetitive. Movement IV features electronic music and Movement V is like jazz. Movement V is the movement that is most fun on the film because of mirror effects used on the tape to make cars appear to be splitting and morphing into one another. Movement VI is dancelike and thrilling and Movement VII is a great finale. Both of these last two experiment with augmented intervals and clashing chord progressions.

This album is very amusing. It is difficult to prevent oneself from smiling during a listening or watching of this album. It is currently one of my favourite albums and I would recommend it to anyone I know who appreciates wind band and orchestra.
