In their soundtrack to The Graduate, Simon & Garfunkel generate a tone of momentous excitement and self-reflection perfectly timed to the ’60s coming-of-age story. On “The Sound of Silence” their intertwined voices feel like the last lights of innocence in a rapidly darkening world, yet the music translates exhilaration as well as fear. Exquisite and eerie, “Scarborough Fair/Canticle (Interlude)” hints at the psychedelic era, while “Mrs. Robinson” is a coffeehouse doo-wop groove that bursts into a farewell sing-along for the folkie era.
