Album Review

Right off the bat, Huevos Rancheros show where their roots are, with a reasonably sedate cover of the Ventures' "Machine Head." They up the volume afterwards, but only a bit. In fact, compared to previous releases, Muerte del Toro is downright sedate and far more traditional. That's not necessarily a bad thing, although those looking for the revved-up material that previously drew comparisons to the Reverend Horton Heat and Man or Astro-Man? may come away disappointed.

Huevos Rancheros formed in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in 1990. Original members of the instrumental rock & roll-type group were bassist Graham Evans, guitarist Brent J. Cooper, and a drummer by the name of Rich E. Evans later deserted the lineup and bassist Tommy Kennedy stepped in to replace him. Over the next decade, Huevos Rancheros would record a long list of singles, music videos, and several albums. The band's music earned it not only a large and loyal fan following, but acknowledgments...
