electrifying effort.

those of you who are lucky enough to witness That 1 Guy's live show will appreciate the energy that is transmitted through his studio work. an astonishingly good disc and unique change of pace than most other artists out there. if you haven't bought this album yet, DOOOO IT.

Quirky is Good

In a world where generic bands like Nickelback and sample-based hip hop dominate the airwaves, it is rare to hear something that is truly unique. For all of you that are bored with mediocrity, That 1 Guy has come to the rescue. This one man band is the brain-child of jazz bassist Mike Silverman, and is probably different than anything you have ever heard – that is, unless you have already heard him play. Frustrated with the limitations of his instrument, Silverman set out to invent something that could reproduce all the sounds in his head. The resulting instrument is the Magic Pipe, a system of electronically wired metal pipes with one bass string running along it, featuring drums attached to foot pedals and a near-by musical saw. The only way to truly visualize the Magic Pipe is to watch it being played (seriously, look it up on Youtube) but essentially it is played like a hybrid of tribal percussion and slide guitar. The Moon is Disgusting is his second album and with its funky, industrial grooves and frenetic percussion, defies classification and is entirely unique. The album is bizarre vocally as it in every other aspect. Silverman’s gravelly baritone sounds like Isaac Brock at his most spastic, and recurring themes in the lyrics are tropical fruit and a moon made of cheese. Despite his ingenuity, sometimes The Moon is Disgusting just gets too weird. To paraphrase a line from the surprisingly great track, “Buttmachine,” ‘just because it’s modern doesn’t mean it sounds good.’ Some tracks such as the 14-minute psychedelic closer, “Rainbow,” are too creative for their own good, but it is always better to try something interesting and fail, than to be generic and mediocre. Silverman’s boundless creativity creates a fun, zany album that is both refreshing and invigorating.

I first heard That 1 Guy in a Roots & Blues Festival and was hooked. An incredible talent and unique sound. Well worth a listen, you may be as suprised as I was.

As the one-man band known as That 1 Guy, Mike Silverman plays an instrument of his own invention, which he calls "the magic pipe." After growing frustrated with other instruments, he designed it over the course of a month spent haunting hardware stores, collecting odd lengths of pipe and tools with the manic fervor of Richard Dreyfuss' character in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Despite never having designed or built an instrument before, at the end of the process he had created something...
