Album Review

Yet another reality TV show, yet another opportunity to pluck a reasonable singer from nowhere and turn them into a star. This time it was the search for the lead character of Maria to appear in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production in London's West end of The Sound of Music. The TV show, named after the lyric of one of the songs in the show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria, was first broadcast on July 29, 2006 through to the series finale on September 16, 2006 with the usual format of a live studio audience, a panel of judges including Lloyd Webber himself, and a premium rate phone-in vote to decide who went forward to the following week's show, although the phone-in actually decided who had received the fewest number of votes and would therefore not be continuing on the program. Having won the show and the contact to appear as Maria, 23-year-old Connie Fisher quickly recorded and released her debut album, Favourite Things, mostly filled with show songs: "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret, "No Matter What" from Whistle Down the Wind, "All That Jazz" from Chicago, "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" from Evita, and "As Long as He Needs Me" from Oliver. As one would expect, there was also a selection of songs from her new show The Sound of Music, the title track, and one of the songs not originally in the stage musical but written especially for the film, "Something Good." Having just won a TV talent show, it would have been difficult for Fisher to fail on record, but unfortunately her choice of material showed that while her career in musicals may be secure, there would be a lot of work to do before she would trouble the pop charts again, in particular on the Goffin & King track, "Natural Woman," which needed a lot more power to be taken seriously, and a version of the Isley Brothers "Shout," with the same arrangement but none of the guts that went into the most famous Lulu hit.
