iTunes Review

With an opening triumvirate of “We Will Rock You,” “We Are the Champions” and “Sheer Heart Attack,” News of the World remains one of Queen’s most successful albums and for good reason. The writing is nothing short of brilliant. The performances are so note-perfect that it’s impossible to imagine them being done any other way. But the album retains that consistency beyond those three infamous tunes. “All Dead, All Dead” is a nicely sedate Brian May pop song. “Sleeping On the Sidewalk,” the other May showcase, is a goof, a quick take on American blues. “Spread Your Wings” was yet another hit for the group, written by bassist John Deacon, the group’s often overlooked secret weapon. “Fight from the Inside,” written, sung and performed by drummer Roger Taylor, is a piece of bright funk. “Get Down, Make Love” has retained so much of its quirky firepower that it was a natural cover for Nine Inch Nails. Spanish guitar highlights “Who Needs You.” “It’s Late” is another solid Queen anthem. The 2011 Deluxe Edition adds two BBC Session recordings, two incendiary live tracks and an outtake of “Feelings, Feelings.”

There can't be a single person who hasn't heard about Queen. We Will rock You and We Are The Champions are international sport anthems, every sports team has played them in their locker room one time or another, but this album is chock full of 5 star song that no one has ever heard of! Melancholy Blues, Sleep On The Sidewalk, Sheer Heart attack! Spread Your Wings for gods sake! Come On! listen to the samples of some of these songs and try to tell me with a straight face that you've heard better! Great Job Queen! P.S. R.I.P. Freddy :'(

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey. For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with the legions...
