Album Review

Through the ups and downs of the '90s, U2 turned out singles that equaled their '80s work, providing the basic ingredients for a great hits collection, The Best of 1990-2000. Songs in which U2 flirted too closely with either dance or electronica have been replaced by mixes that attempt to give these tunes the sound of neo-classicist U2 à la All That You Can't Leave Behind. So, all the pop material ("Gone," "Discotheque," "Staring at the Sun") is given new mixes, as is "Numb." There are great songs here — not just "Mysterious Ways" and "Beautiful Day," but relatively rare items like the Passengers tune "Miss Sarajevo" and the Batman & Robin theme "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me."

Many Good Songs but this Compilation Could be Better

Great, but under appreciated, era for U2. Songs like "One" and "Beautiful Day' are classics. Still, this package has several issues that need resolving. What should not be on here: 1. Miss Sarajevo - Not a "U2" track. This is a Best of U2! 2. The Hands that Built America - BORING! 3. Gone - Not a bad song but not good (or popular) enough to warrant inclusion here. What needs to be on here: 1. The Fly - Big song back in 1991. Introduced the world to the new sound of U2. 2. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (Temple Bar Remix) - This version needs to be on a full LP. 3. Lemon - The single edit version would suffice. 4. Walk On - It won a Grammy for "Record of the Year!" Why wasn't it included!?!?!?!? 5. Elevation (Tomb Raider Mix) - Same reason as #2 Tidy it up a little bit and your looking at a five-star album!

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands in the world — equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional, the rhythm section of Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton played the...
