Their heaviest record

Although the production is pure late-sixties crankage, the addition of jazz-influenced Phil Collins on drums and resident extra-terrestrial Steve Hackett on lead guitar (after original Genesis guitar genius Anthony Phillips tragically locked himself in the studio and swallowed the key) gives this 3rd album by Genesis proof to their fans and detractors alike that they had truly reinvented themselves. as of any such thing were necessary.

Except for co-founder and lead madman Peter Gabriel's escalatingly over-the-top eccentric experimentalism (lyrics and costumes not non-attributable), Phil's brilliant fusion drums and Steve's wild metal tone steal the show. Turn up loud at a really bawdy English Comp Lit house party, and check all the girls for adam's apples.

Eccentric but entrancing

Even for Genesis this album is eccentric, but it’s often entrancing and marked the advent of the amazing drumming of Phil Collins. If the band’s narratives could get a little too expansive at times, one of their best tales, The Musical Box, is 10½ minutes of purely great Genesis. The eerie fairy-tale of murder, exile and lust is unmatched in its intensity on this album, but Nursery Cryme does feature many worthy moments, including the shimmering Fountains of Salmacis which evokes sounds Pink Floyd were exploring on Meddle at the time. Fans will know Hogweed from Live, but don’t overlook the rollicking Harold the Barrel and its haunting protagonist.

In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups,...
