Album Review

Jards Macalé has been known as a pop composer since the times of Tropicália - he even included in this album "Vapor barato," a hit in Gal Costa's voice. But this release has nothing to do with Tropicália. A modern samba work, with sensitive compositions singing the charms and problems of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Jards' architectural poetry. The album opens with "Rei de Janeiro," an obvious melodic reference to the Brazilian anthem. "Favela" ("Slum") describes the creation of a slum, with reference to the violence of drug dealers. "Terceira vez" makes mention to "A primeira vez," samba by Bide and Marçal turned a hit by João Gilberto. Follows a set of beautiful sambas, by Jards and other composers, where Jards is backed by the excellent samba specialist, the pianist/arranger Cristóvão Bastos, together with other competent musicians, including the special guests Velha Guarda da Portela.
