iTunes Review

Cansei de ser Sexy (Portuguese for “tired of being sexy”) have come a long way since leaving their Sao Paolo art school/dance club roots, and the five girl/one guy Brazilian band seem to be having too fun much to worry about anything as mundane as pop world domination. Seattle’s Sub Pop label shrewdly swapped out four of the original Brazilian release’s Portuguese-language tracks, but the album’s core remains an often loopy mash-up of electro dance beats, New Wave sass and self-deprecating 'tude: Hard not to like a band who introduces itself with a Toni Basil-worthy cheerleader’s chant that insists “C-S-S-Suxxx!” Or one who forges something as instantly inviting as “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” from a grab-bag of cheesy synth riffs and club music clichés, all the while paying tribute to one of their own fave indie acts. There’s an innocent, amateurish quality to vocalist Lovefoxxx that, wed to the snarky disdain for fame and pretension of "Art Bitch" and “Meeting Paris Hilton" and her band's disparate pop-craft savvy on “Off the Hook” and “Alcohol,” can be downright irresistible. In a world crowded by sanctimonious pop stars pleading to be taken seriously, CSS often succeeds simply by challenging you not to.

You already have Freezepop, Le Tigre, The Go! Team, Metric, The Postal Service, The Faint, and every other "fun" band out there and you are always seeking another band to get your boogie on to and Cansei de Ser Sexy (Tired of Being Sexy in English) deliver just that. CSS's first North American release is hardly tired and has a bunch of sexy to spare. The six piece band is from Brazil and their wacky lyrics are in English. " music is where I'd like you to touch" from "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex" is a good example of some of the lyrics you'd want to sing along with at a live show (on tour now across North America). Other songs are about sex, alcohol, and Paris Hilton to name a few. The music is raw, simple, and catchy as hell. Lovefoxxx's talk-sing style, much like Nirmala Basnayake of Controller.Controller, is matched perfectly with good doses of synth mixed in with the disco-rock. CSS' self-tited album should definitely be in anyone's collection who enjoys music that is free of pretention and filled with pop goodness.

Original? YES //Catchy? YES// Fun? YES// Vulgar? YES// Offensive? NO//Good? YES// Geti it? YES

If you just realized CSS existed because of the ipod commercial, shame on you.

I'm sick and tired of people realizing a band or album exists because they heard their song on a stupid commercial. Especially when they only like the song that appeared on the commercial, not the rest of the album. I have heard this album about a year ago,and I thought it was amazing. Now I have people I know singing the "Music is my hot,hot sex" song, and they barely know what the band's real name is. For those who agree with me, great. For those who don't, I don't care. I'm just pissed at morons ruining the music scene.

Formed: 2003 in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

São Paulo, Brazil's provocative, freewheeling dance-rock sextet CSS take their name from an abbreviation of "cansei de ser sexy," which is Portuguese for "tired of being sexy" (though, considering that the lead singer goes by the name Lovefoxxx, it's arguable how much that phrase actually applies to the band). Formed in 2003, CSS originally included bassist Iracema Trevisan, guitarist/drummer/keyboardist Luiza Sá, guitarist Ana Rezende, guitarist/drummer Carolina Parra, and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer...
