Editors’ Notes

Kings Of Leon producer Jacquire King helped Augustana veer from their Coldplay-by-way-of-U2 inspired piano ballads toward rootsy arena anthems. The opening tune, “Steal Your Heart,” is an impassioned insta-hit that has more in common with early-‘90s Bruce Springsteen. The warm guitar phase introducing “Wrong Side of Love” sounds imported straight from the House Of Love’s 1988 hit “Christine” before Dan Layus comes in singing like Nils Lofgren. Underneath the catchy piano melodies and sweeping string section of “Counting Stars” you can hear the sound of a band taut from the inimitable experience of relentless touring. The more complex changes on the acoustic-based “Borrowed Time” are just as tight, though this song contrasts the band’s flawless changes with lazy slide-guitars, light shuffled rhythms and plenty of room for Layus’ lyrics to stretch out enough for some sublime close-harmonies that give the tune a ‘70s country-rock feel. Standout song “Hurricane” blends that backlit twang with a “Beast Of Burdon” swagger. “Hearts Wonder” and “Last Mistake” are exclusive songs deeply rooted in Springsteen’s heartland hymns.

These guys never disappoint

Augustana's follow up to All the Stars and Boulevards showed their progression as artists and was a great album from start to finish. In this follow up to Can't Love Can't Hurt Augustana has done it again - they've produced an album that is better than their last.

I've seen a few of my favourite bands seem to digress with each successive album so I'm always anxious to hear the new release of my current favouites. However I can say that this one didn't disappoint and if you liked Augustana before you'll love them now.

Wow!! They have done it once again! They never fail to bring us yet another fantastic album!

For lack of a better word it is great !

It's not just the same sounding songs over and over and the lyrics have substance which is a nice change from the crappy music that is taking over

Formed: 2002 in Greenville, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Augustana's music is the heartland equivalent of Coldplay and Keane, with a touch of mid-'90s adult alternative throwback (think Counting Crows or the Wallflowers) also peppering the band's rootsy, piano-based rock. Although based in California, the group formed in southern Illinois in 2002, while singer/keyboardist Dan Layus and guitarist Josiah Rosen were studying contemporary Christian music at Greenville College. The band's original lineup also included bassist Simeon Lohrmann, second keyboardist...
