iTunes Review

My Morning Jacket is one of the most intriguing rock bands of the 21st century because there is nothing they won’t try. Their unusual mix of acoustic guitars and space grooves, of brass bands and subtly modulating keyboards make them an unclassifiable group. The only way to understand what they do is to hear them firsthand and see what sense it makes to you. Circuital is a much more carefully produced album than their previous catalog. There is still deep reverb from time to time, but it is no longer a catchall technique. “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” may be the most straightforward piece they’ve recorded, an acoustic ballad with strings that evokes the early 1970s. “Outta My System” crests on a pop groove inspired by the Beach Boys. “Holdin’ On to Black Metal” has a funky kick that’s punctuated with a fuzztone guitar. “First Light” flows with an impressive gait. “You Wanna Freak Out” has a sashaying innocence. “Victory Dance” strips things down in the chorus to where the each note is held out for maximum effect. The iTunes LP includes a video documentary of the making of the album and handwritten lyrics.

Customer Reviews

This album is F#@!! great! and I don't say that very often

I just said in, this album is F#@!! great! Holdin On to Black Metal, Outta My System, Victory Dance, this music has substance, value, and quality.

Better and Better

My Morning Jacket wasn't so good in their early years, not that they were bad, just ok. But as time passes they prove to get better and better and more innovative with their style and choices and ideas. I like a band that progresses with time and doesn't jump on the pop or popular music band wagon but learns from that kind of music to better help themselves. That's why My Morning Jacket is one of my favorite bands. If you liked Evil Urges or you're a stoner, because lets face it, half their fan base is stoners, or even just a plain music lover, you'll love this album. A must buy.

The best

Hands down the best MMJ album to date. Full stop. Period.

Genre: Alternative

Starting in the late '90s and throughout the 2000s and 2010s, My Morning Jacket expanded on their rock and country roots, embracing everything from neo-psychedelia to funk, prog, and reggae in their sonic experimentation. By the time Evil Urges arrived in mid-2008, they had successfully molded themselves into Kentucky's answer to Wilco: a band rooted in alt-country and rock & roll, but given to sonic experimentation and unexpected genre changes at every turn. My Morning Jacket's de facto leader...
