Album Review

When a singer/songwriter fights the big record label — in this case Dreamworks — because the label doesn't understand the artist's vision, then buys back a record so he can find someone else who cares enough to release it, it's admirable and has a "this must be good" allure for sure. One listen to The Clarence Greenwood Recordings and you might have a guess at why Dreamworks said "no." It's a wandering album, one that Greenwood's fan base can connect with, but more difficult for everyone else. The timely "people wanna bomb us" number, "Bullet and a Target," is the album's centerpiece single; it presents a shock-value laundry list of depressing situations, Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" for the Dave Matthews generation. Elsewhere a vagrant falls in deep love with a billboard and D'Artagnan meets his match. From there it gets more undecipherable, but it's a record he fought hard for and his fans will love trying to figure it all out.

Customer Reviews

This one stopped me in my tracks.

The iTunes album review given to this CD makes a point of assuming that this album will not be very popular with those not already fans of Citizen Cope, I beg to differ. I had no inkling of his existance until one day I heard Pablo Picasso being played in an obscure little shop, and I was stopped in my tracks trying to absorb every note of it. I immediately went out in search of the CD and after getting it home to play it, I was so relieved that almost every song was great. Admittedly, there is some uneven bits, but D'Artagnan's Theme, Sideways, and especially Bullet and a Target are all so fantastic that if the album had only these four songs on it, it still would be amazing. I love this CD.

Citizen Cope is both a person (singer/songwriter Clarence Greenwood) and an acoustic-driven band. Greenwood first broke into the music business by appearing on albums by Maryland-based rapper Basehead (1993's Not in Kansas Anymore and 1996's Faith), and he used that momentum to issue his first...
