iTunes Review

Black Sabbath's second album is nothing less than a blitzkrieg of in-your-face attitude. The politically charged epic "War Pigs/Luke's Wall" sparks the attack with Bill Ward's hardcore drum thrashing. Ozzy Osbourne's distinctive Brummie wail carries songs like the raw and craggy "Iron Man" to metal anthem status. And as for the high-octane title track, legend has it that the band knocked it out in less than half an hour. Not bad for the cut that essentially created the template for thrash metal.

Black BLACK BLACKEST

While the Rolling Stones were prancing around making black rock, while Jimi Hendrix was a black man making bluesy rock, these four Birmingham dudes were making the blackest music of their time. Iron Man - a song of deprivation and revenge. Hippies sang against war. Black Sabbath spoke of the horror of the poor enduring the hell of being puppets on a string in wars created just for fun. Rat Salad must have inspired Greg Ginn with Iommi's masterful work up the fret board. This music is not 'metal'. Listen to Paranoid, and you'll hear the foundation of later Black Flag, Nirvana, Soundgarden. Of course Black Sabbath became anachronistic in the late 70s and 80s and Ronnie James Dio was horrible. But listen to this record, along with the debut and Masters Of Reality, and enjoy a journey into the darkest depths of the depravity of your mind...

An English hard rock institution whose influence on heavy metal cannot be overstated, Black Sabbath not only pioneered the genre, they helped launch the career of one of its most colorful and controversial characters in Ozzy Osbourne. The band distilled the smoke and strife of its industrial hometown into a punitive blast of doom-laden heavy blues-rock via bass player Geezer Butler's dystopian lyrics, which leaned heavily on the occult, and guitarist Tony Iommi's seismic riffing. When paired with...
