Album Review

Star pianist Lang Lang joins star conductor Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater to perform two star-making works of the piano and orchestra repertoire. Both works contain themes that are very familiar to many. The third movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2 contains the "Full Moon and Empty Arms" theme, while the Rhapsody has the romantic 18th variation that is frequently heard in film soundtracks. The real attraction here, however, is the combination of two spectacular musicians who each have their own following and their own distinct style of interpretation. Lang Lang is known for being highly individual and subjective, and Gergiev is known for his attention to detail and the vitality of his readings. The resulting combination here is guaranteed to be unique and, at times, surprising., Rovi

Shame

Itunes has taken an excellent recording of Lang Lang's brilliant interpretation of Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini and rendered it completely unbearable by splicing it no less than 25 times just so that each variation can be purchased separately. What results is the loss of so much music that what we're left with is a disjointed series of snippets that simply do not flow. Rachmaninov might appreciate this spectacle of virtuosity, but he would surely be disgusted by the butchery imposed by iTunes.

Rach Rocks

This recording is clean and enthusiastic without over-dramatizing or rushing it, like far too many do. Rachmaninov is moody, and Lang Lang does a great job at portraying that. He is precise and punctuated as Rachmaninov himself is, and he would surely appreciate this spectacle of vituosity.

this is great

This is a great album, it has a lot more feeling then most classical songs. However, there were a few songs that broke after like 20 seconds, and continued on the next song. Otherwise, this was a 10/10 album.

Chinese pianist Lang Lang was born on June 14, 1982, in Shenyang, China. Labeled "the world's most successful pianist" by German newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag, Lang Lang's fame has by far eclipsed that of most classical performers. Hearing Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in a Tom & Jerry cartoon inspired him to learn the piano at the tender age of two; at the age of five, he already gave his first public performance and won the Shenyang Piano Competition. He entered the Peking Conservatory...
