Scott Cowan

Steve keeps it going for nearly an hour with sardonic wit that is never pretentious, even though he is clearly a well-read person. He steps outside the typical cynical agenda but is relentless in his attack on right wing policies, overexposed and under-qualified celebrities (this means you Tim Tebow), and nuances of everyday life. Oh, and he's very funny. He actually invites heckling at the end and revels in self-deprecating humour. A gem.

The funniest thing on the album is the cover.

I bought this album because the only review written so far had been relatively positive. Five minutes into it I was more than a little disappointed. You can hear the crowd laughing, but it honestly wasn't very funny. If you only occasionally listen to stand-up, or just walk in with ridiculously low expectations, you might be satisfied. I found that the humour level was rather sophomoric, and the jokes mostly predicable and usually pedestrian.

Take your 9.99 and get the new Louis CK, or Patton Oswalt, or even Maria Bamford. Heck, for the same money buy "I just had sex" by the lonely island 5 times and you'll be happier than with this album.

On the plus side, if you've ever toyed with the idea of becoming a stand-up, this album will you give the confidence you need to get on stage. One can't help but walk away with the attitude "Well, if he can get laughs with that material, I'm golden".

Moonlighting as a standup comic, Hofstetter's hometown newspaper, The Queens Tribune,...
