Pleasantly Surprising!

Tom Jones has long been known as a strong vocalist who mostly appealed to our Moms or Grandmothers. This album shows another side to Tom. This is not your Mom's Tom Jones!

There is a depth, honesty and vulnerability here that has not come through in his traditionally "pop" past. The song selections are gospel standards that raise serious questions about God and eternity. This originally struck me as disingenuous considering Sir Tom's reputation and personna as a sex symbol from the 60's and 70's. It also seemed to be an imitation of Johnny Cash's hugely successful American Recordings produced by Rick Rubin. Some of the song selections are even the same! I gave it a chance though and found a sincerity and a believability to the content and I really appreciate the vocal work and the sound. This is a rich album and is certainly worth listening to. Producer Ethan Young (notable for working with the Kings of Leon) has done for Tom Jones what Rubin did for Cash.

Thanks Mr. Jones for the album and for not cowering from these all important subjects. By the way, this new album also prompted me to go back and revisit some of the old Tom Jones tunes and now I find myself enjoying the songs my mother loved all those years ago!

A redécouvrir

A 70 ans Tom Jones démontré encore toute la richesse et la puissance de sa voix. On est loin de Sex Bomb et de ses albums que nos "tantes" connaissaient par cœur et c'est tant mieux. Un album a découvrir pour la diversité de son talent

Very Surprised!!

Love it. Got to check out "Burning Hell".

Tom Jones became one of the most popular vocalists to emerge from the British Invasion. Since the mid-'60s, Jones has sung nearly every form of popular music -- pop, rock, show tunes, country, dance, and techno, he's sung it all. His actual style -- a full-throated, robust baritone that had little regard for nuance and subtlety -- never changed, he just sang over different backing tracks. On-stage, Jones played up his sexual appeal; it didn't matter whether he was in an unbuttoned shirt or a tuxedo,...
