iTunes Review

Atlas Sound is a solo project for Bradford Cox, the prolific songwriter and frontman for the band Deerhunter. Parallax, his third release, is a hazy and intoxicating melding of pop hooks and sonic experimentation, ambient sounds and melodic wanderings. While each Atlas Sound album has been superbly produced (with this one no exception), Parallax stands apart due to the number of more straightforward songs. Heavy textures and deep reverb support the songwriting and accentuate rather than obscure his voice; it’s a noticeable difference. “Te Amo” is strange yet catchy. The jangly “Mona Lisa” features an infectious chorus, and “Angel Is Broken” and the title track are indie rock delivered with a confident croon. In contrast are tracks like “Modern Aquatic Nightsongs,” with a swirling vortex of eerie loops, and the meandering dreaminess of “Terra Incognita” and “Flagstaff.” These juxtapositions, and the album’s brilliant flow, make Parallax baffling, beautiful, and worthy of repeat listens.

I bought Mona Lisa

...because someone else said it was their favourite track. And because the lyrics sound like, "The Mona Li Saskatchewan," I bought it. If I every see him in concert, I'll be waving a green flag, singing, "Saskatchewan!" like a maniac.
But who am I kidding, I'll never see this guy in concert. BECAUSE I LIVE IN SASKATCHEWAN!!

A terrific album from an accomplished singer and songwriter

Deerhunter vocalist's solo project Atlas Sound delivers some technical and musical magic on his newest full length Parallax. Each track arrives and departs with maturity and patience, traversing a route not unlike The The in its heyday, replete with erudite vocals from Bradford Cox that quietly mutate from Death From Above 1979's Sebastien Grainger to U2's Bono. Closing the album with one of the best tracks, Lightsworks, assures repeated plays and signal that this cat knows what he is doing. For those parts of the planet with discernible changes of season, Parallax is a welcome record for our darkening days.

Atlas Sound is the solo project of Bradford Cox, the striking and eccentric vocalist for experimental indie rocker act Deerhunter. Cox was born in 1982 in Athens, Georgia, a town whose burgeoning music scene greatly influenced the singer. He identified with the B-52's while growing up, particularly the late Ricky Wilson, and co-founded Deerhunter with drummer/keyboardist Moses Archuleta in 2001. Deerhunter released two full-length albums and an EP before taking a break in 2007, with the bandmembers...
