Radio friendly rock-pop

Jason Collett has put out a more rock-pop album, shifting from his previous album, the folk-rock Idols of Exile, which sounded like a radio-friendly Jeff Tweedy teamed up with various Broken Social Scene affiliates. This element is sorely missing in this EP. There are no supporting female vocals, horns, banjos or that quintessential BBS guitar sound. Perhaps Jason wanted to distance his music from the BBS collective but unfortunately it doesn’t really work for me as Supermodel and Sugar Sugar are very generic radio-friendly rock songs with sub-par lyrics. The standout tracks for me are Too Much, which has an Elliot Smith element to it with its whispery vocals and catchy acoustic guitar and Silent One which sounds more like a mainstream Beatles rock-pop song. Otherwise, the remaining songs are neither amazing or poor, just average. This 3 star rating is more of a 2.5 rating but the affordable price bumps it up. Jason’s quality music is found in his previous album, which I highly recommend.
