Album Review

Although it occasionally sounds a little ordinary, Athenaeum's debut album is an appealing collection of jangly, melodic post-grunge that draws equally from R.E.M. and its offspring. The songs may be a little uneven, but when they get their hooks together, as on the single "What I Didn't Know," the group has a ragged, catchy charm that bodes well for their future.

Athenaeum enjoyed minor success in the late '90s, when the alternative rock group cracked the Billboard Hot 100 with "What I Didn't Know." Formed in Greensboro, NC, the band was primarily the brainchild of singer/guitarist Mark Kano and drummer Nic Brown, although Kano proved to be the only constant member throughout the group's career.
