Editors’ Notes

The beautiful haze that hangs over everything the Raveonettes do is again thick and mood enhancing. There’s a palpable sense of haunted enlightenment throughout the tracks. “Recharge & Revolt” is a chilling opener that’s part Jesus & Mary Chain, part-Cure and part-pure Raveonette. “War In Heaven” channels a somber groove, while “Forget That You’re Young” sounds like a beach tune where the sun blurs into the ocean waves. “Apparitions” adds a sinister creep. “Summer Moon” turns in a sweet ballad that’s as delicate as anything the duo has recorded. The harmonies twist together in decadent harmony. Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo lean towards Gothic but retain a love for simple rock n’ roll as “My Time’s Up” plays like a ‘50s ballad with tons of echoed shimmer for dramatic effect. Their music is like listening to old-time radio with your head buried in a funnel. It’s trippy and freaky, yet familiar and oddly soothing.

Delicious stuff !

The Raveonettes have grown into their sound since first hearing their first EP Whip It On in 2002 while working in a CD shop. For newcomers, expect The Raveonettes' newest Raven in the Grave to come fully equipped with overproduced guitar, drums and anything else that the Danish duo find in the studio and play the hell out of it or drive it to distortion. Ringing guitars bleed into echoing percussion to be replaced by absolute sweetness afterward. Tremendous stuff when you're ready for this kind of experience.

Ever wondered what's on Edward Scissorhands iPod? -Look no further.

The Rave's are in fine form here making their boldest outing yet. Delicate soundscapes and soaring synths abound. The opener, Recharge & Revolt sets the mood with a driving beat and wicked synths. Matching "Remember" from Chain Gang of Love as the perfect album ice breaker. War in Heaven kicks up the fuzz and delivers a wall of sound that only the Rave's can.

Slower ballads like Summer Moon, My Time's Up and Forget That You're Young are all hauntingly beautiful arrangements, with darkly sweet lyrics and hooks that will tug at your heart long after they're through. Like a winter stroll through the woods with your sweetheart.

Nice too that the distortional flourishes are kept in check this time, and don't drown the gorgeous vocals as they sometimes do on Lust Lust Lust.
Awesome album from start to finish Heck, even the album art is cool!

Formed: 1998 in Copenhagen, Denmark

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Combining the noisy swells of the Jesus and Mary Chain with melodic elements of '50s rock & roll, the Raveonettes formed in Copenhagen during 2001. Guitarist Sune Rose Wagner had tried assembling a band for several years, traveling between New York City, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and an island outside of Seattle in his search for like-minded musicians. A longtime fan of Bob Dylan, he also prized the songwriting of Buddy Holly, the harmonies of the Everly Brothers, and the guitar work of Mark Knopfler,...
