Album Review

Like Britney Spears before her, Demi Lovato pretty much admits in the title of her sophomore album that she's serving up more of the same the second time around, but unlike Britney, that may not have been Demi's intention. For Here We Go Again, Lovato makes a relatively clean break from the Jonas Brothers, who penned much of her debut, Don't Forget, drafting sensitive AAA singer/songwriters Jon McLaughlin and John Mayer presumably to give Lovato a bit of mature veneer, a subtle shift buried underneath the relentlessly cheerful Radio Disney production and Lovato's irrepressible spunk. Both sonic characteristics tend to camouflage Demi's biggest moves away from teen pop — the fussy balladeering of "Falling Over Me," the mock-Mraz jazz-pop "Every Time You Lie," the sober soul searching of the Mayer collaboration "World of Chances," the Celtic flair of "Gift of a Friend" — which also happen to be the very things that make Here We Go Again not quite as much fizzy fun as Don't Forget. Not quite as much fun, but still fun, particularly when Lovato tears into hooky power pop like "Here We Go Again," "Solo," "Remember December," and the stomping "So Far So Great," the theme song to the TV show Sonny with a Chance, songs that are ideally matched to Lovato's adolescent energy and spirit, which remain her most appealing qualities.

Here we go again, another excellent album from Demi!

Demi Lovato has truly grown up with her latest album "Here We Go Again". This time Lovato started working other big names like John Mayer in this album. This time when songs are supposed to be soft, it's soft and when it's a hard out rock and roll ... man, it's really a rock and roll. The last album was a bit Disney-ish, maybe because almost all the songs were co-authored by the Jonas Brothers. This time, most of the music is written by Lovato herself, which is an excellent thing as the album is definitely more personal this time around. Unfortunately, I didn't like the song World of Chances and I find that the track "So Far So Good" is just shoved in there as a filler. Sure, it's a great theme song to her TV show, but it breaks the flow of the album and it seems heavily misplaced. My favourite two songs are Catch Me and Got Dynamite. They are truly black and white contrast. Catch Me is this album's soft sweet song and Got Dynamite is the absolute rock and roller. I was floored that Lovato can pull a Breaking Benjamin/Maroon 5 style song. Hopefully she makes more Got Dynamite-like songs in the future. All-in-all an excellent record and I see a large career for her outside of Disney.

Here We Go Again

Although I was never a big Demi fan, it's not easy listening to her debut album and not getting addicted. With the release of this disc, she has only gotten better, and I hope she continues to expand her musical horizion. Happy listening!
