Album Review

Released in 2003 — the same year they decided to call it quits — Hit & Run is a greatest-hits collection from the Canadian blues-rock band Big Sugar. With "Diggin' a Hole,” "If I Had My Way," "Better Get Used to It," and “The Scene” all on the track list, newcomers get the necessary hits. Veteran fans will appreciate how well the set is rounded out as album cuts like “Ride Like Hell” and their cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” are just too superior to be considered filler. The collection also features two previously unreleased tracks, “I Want You Now” and “Three Minute Song.”

Y U So Shady?

This was Big Sugar's final album, before Gordie Johnson created the band Grady, has 3 new tracks, I Want You Now, Trouble in the City and 3 Minute Song, all very good tunes. I purchased this album back when it originally came out in 2003, it included a free bonus CD including rare live footage, which made the CD as good as it could get. This CD is for anyone who's a fan of Big Sugar but isn't familiar with their songs, check out Grady if they ever come to your town!

Good Mix of Big Sugar

Huge Big Sugar Fan, and all the songs are great. The new songs on this album are weak however and if you already have Big Sugar's other albums don't bother with this album. Gordie's new band Grady has two albums out now and both are incredible. For Grady think Ride Like Hell…but at top speed and heavy.

Remember Big Sugar?

Somewhere on the periphery on my musical memory the band Big Sugar enters, ever so briefly, then exits into possible total vanquishment. Fortunately, while exploring itunes I accidentally stumbled onto this all-but-forgotten band and – holy beejesus – they’re amazing. Buy this album.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The eclectic Toronto blues-rock outfit Big Sugar was primarily the project of singer/guitarist Gordie Johnson, who teamed with bassist Terry Wilkins and drummer Al Cross to record the group's 1992 self-titled debut LP. By the time of 1993's Five Hundred Pounds, Wilkins was missing from the lineup; a number of guest musicians fleshed out the recording, among them multi-instrumentalist Kelly Hoppe, who (along with new bassist Garry Lowe) was installed as a permanent member by the 1995 EP Dear M.F....
