iTunes Review

The sassy, catchy “Mercy” and the aching “Syrup & Honey” show traces of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, but Duffy sounds most like herself on “Delayed Devotion,” a song that forgoes nostalgia and delivers instead a very sharp and well-written contemporary pop song. Elsewhere, spacious, string-laden songs like “Distant Dreamer” and “Rockferry” owe much to producer Bernard Butler’s former band Suede.

I find Duffy exhilarating and a breath of fresh air. In a music world consumed with repetitive beat box sounds and dance track after dance track. Duffy even proves that you don't have to be mixed up into alcohol and drugs to make a great album (like a certain other throwback performer from England called Amy). Long live this sound.

Out Of Nowhere, whos is Duffy? She's an Artist

I have not heard any song from Duffy untill I listen this album. People are comparing her to Amy Whinehouse, I can hear that. I also hear a bit of Nora Jones. But this album should not be a comparison. Its unique and its a Duffy album. Check it out. Its a very good listen and I am sure this album will be a big hit for 2008. Enjoy

That's where I got my first impression of Duffy. Her video was playing on the promo reel in the theatre lobby. This whole "Motown sound" idea is an interesting direction for pop music to go through. Duffy's sound can appeal to a wide age demographic but it could take a long time to get to "older" people on board. Maybe that's why her marketing people are putting her videos in Famous Players lobbies. Is Duffy the next Amy Winehouse or a more accessible uptempo Norah Jones? Time will tell. This album is a fine experiment that is imaginative and musically interesting. A nice introduction of Duffy to the world but too much hype might spoil the surprise.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Emerging during the same boom of retro U.K.-based singers that launched Amy Winehouse, Duffy distinguished herself with a melodic, vintage voice that brought to mind such '60s artists as Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Born in the small coastal town of Nefyn on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, Wales, Amy Ann Duffy began singing at an early age. With a record collection limited to her parents' classic LPs, though, she had few influences to draw from. Her father's VHS tapes of the 1960s television...
