Celine Dion dives into a diverse assortment of ballads and uptempo tunes on Sans Attendre, her first French-language album in five years. The Quebecois singer has often used her Francophone recordings to reveal her subtler, more introspective side; this time, she benefits from songs contributed by such legendary French-Canadian composers as Luc Plamondon and Jean-Pierre Ferland, as well as from orchestrations that combine European cabaret elements with modern pop. Family, war and mortality (along with love in all its pleasures and miseries) are reoccurring themes here. “Parler a mon pere” (a loving remembrance of a departed father) and “Celle qui m’a tout appis” (a portrait of a mother’s sunset days) allow Dion to deliver especially sensitive performances. There are lighter moments as well, such as the buoyant “Le Miracle,” featuring a children’s choir. Duets with Ferland (“Une chance qu’on sia”), French pop star Johnny Hallyday (“L’amour peut prendre froid”) and the late French Caribbean singer Henri Salvador (“Tant de temps”) add to the musical richness and emotional depth of this outstanding release.
