Album Review

To wax poetic about the soundtrack to Disney's Tim Allen-heavy remake of the Shaggy Dog is akin to spending more than a second considering the inclusion of a track called "Woof! There It Is." Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken's brief and capable score notwithstanding, there's little to entice anybody under the age of seven to give Shaggy Dog a solid listen. That said, the collection isn't bereft of good-natured fun. Whether it's Jaja Biggs squeezing out some harmless reggaeton on "Every Dog Has It's Day," George Clinton serving up a plate of "Atomic Dog" or Akon doing his best urban Kenny Loggins on the title cut "Big Dog," the Shaggy Dog is about as harmless as a day in the park watching your beloved canine chase Frisbees and eat poop.

Distinguished composer/lyricist Alan Menken is responsible for penning many of the catchiest tunes from Disney features of the late '80s onward, including such chart-toppers as "Whole New World" (from Aladdin) and "Colors of the Wind" (Pocahontas). Menken is a graduate of New York University and got his start when noted playwright Howard Ashman chose him and Lehman Engel to write the music for his 1978 adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater.
