Album Review

The most successful girl group of the '60s, the Supremes not only had the look, grace, and style to make the trio extremely marketable in an era when television appearances were beginning to be a quick, clear way to sell singles, they also had Motown Records' amazing songwriting stable, most notably the writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, behind them, not to mention the legendary Motown session band the Funk Brothers, and during a time when AM radio was dominated by the Beatles and the British Invasion bands, the Supremes were able to more than hold their own with classic and enduring singles like “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Back in My Arms Again,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” among others. This two-disc set celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Supremes' first single release (“I Want a Guy” b/w “Never Again,” released as a single in 1961) by combining the mono and stereo versions of the 1965 Supremes LP More Hits by the Supremes on the first disc (along with an interview and the group’s Coca-Cola commercials from the period) and adding a second disc with rare and previously unreleased tracks, including a live show from Detroit’s Fox Theater, live spots from a show in Paris, stereo mixes of tracks from the Motown vaults, alternate versions of hits, stereo mixes of the group’s German singles, and two songs performed by the Supremes for the movie Beach Ball, all of which makes this package a collector’s delight. Oh, and you also get, of course, the mono and stereo versions of the two number one hits the original LP produced, "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Back in My Arms Again,” two signature tracks in the Supremes' impressive legacy.

The most successful American performers of the 1960s, the Supremes for a time rivaled even the Beatles in terms of red-hot commercial appeal, reeling off five number one singles in a row at one point. Critical revisionism has tended to undervalue the Supremes' accomplishments, categorizing their work as more lightweight than the best soul stars (or even the best Motown stars), and viewing them as a tool for Berry Gordy's crossover aspirations. There's no question that there was about as much pop...
